Helping a Parent Give Up the Car Keys

The hardest conversation in caregiving gets easier when there's a real plan on the other side of it.
It is about loss, not driving
The resistance is rarely about the car. It is about groceries, church, the doctor and the idea of asking permission to leave the house. Arguing about reflexes misses the point entirely.
Bring a replacement, not a removal
Come to the conversation with a concrete plan: this is who drives you, this is what it costs, this is how you book it, and you do not have to ask me first. Autonomy preserved is resistance removed.
Start before the crisis
Set up a standing weekly trip while driving is still possible. By the time the keys go, the routine already exists and nothing about daily life collapses.
