How Wheelchair Securement Actually Works
Four-point securement, lift operation and what a safe wheelchair ride should look and feel like.
The four-point system
A properly secured wheelchair is anchored at four points on the chair frame — never on wheels, footrests or removable parts — with straps tensioned to the vehicle floor track. The rider then gets a separate lap and shoulder belt. The chair is restrained; the person is restrained; they are restrained independently.
What the lift should do
The lift platform should sit flat on the ground, hold the chair with rollstops raised at both ends, and rise smoothly with the driver present the entire time. A rider should never be left unattended on a raised platform.
Questions worth asking any provider
Ask how often vehicles and lifts are inspected, whether drivers are trained specifically in passenger assistance, and what the plan is if a lift fails mid-trip. Any provider worth booking will answer all three without hesitating.
